On AIX 4.3.3 what is th best way to backup the ODM? I am paranoid about my system having a corrupt ODM. Any suggestions?

I know a daily mksysb would be nice.

A backup (tar, backup, ...) of the ODM directories /etc/objrepos /usr/lib/objrepos /usr/share/lib/objrepos may ease your mind.

You decide where to put the backups and how many versions you want to keep. Note that in /usr/lib/objrepos there is the LPP inventory class, which is pretty big...

thanks for the good post, as usual.

Now the key is, how do i know if the ODM is being corrupt? How and what do I restore to fix? Do I restore the entire thing?

TIA

Well, mostly by the time you have a corrupt ODM, you either no longer have a system, or you have a system which doesn't function properly.

In most cases you'll be in contact with an IBM support organization, and if any ODM corruption is suspected, it is always handy to be able to provide a recently made backup of the ODM files.

And yes, a recent mksysb tape or cd can prove unvaluable!
