I want to investigate a backup NRS before I get to in deep with my new voip project. Can i run a backup NRS service at a different site and as a virtual machine say in a data centre so in the even of the primary NRS on my CS1000 failing at least my other sites will still be able to query for routes to one another should the worst happen.

You can have an alternate NRS somewhere in the network as long as it's reachable by the remote sites. It cannot run on a virtual machine, but rather a COTS server or CPPM signaling server.

Since you state "other sites" do any of these other sites have a sig serv? if so you can just pick one and change the roll to be your Alternate Gatekeeper and then go to all of your other sites and setup that IP in the alternate gatekeeper blanks and set them to be failsafes... we just did this last week... we had 2 SS in HQ and the alternate lived on the SS sitting under the primary in the same rack.. we moved it to the SS that is clear across the U.S.

Thanx,
Aqua

In my situation i only have 1 CS1000 but lots of Avaya IP office and BCMs. In my company we have 11 CS1000s but i don't think any of these is quite ready to join my grand plan as yet (more to do with politics and power struggles). It's a real shame actually because i have so much spare horsepower in our DC in Dublin if only i could build an NRS virtually. Does the NRS run on linux or what? Perhaps I could bluff my support company somewhat.
