Hi all,

At our company we are using tivoli storage manager in combination with a magstar3575.Due to limitations of our robots we are looking for another solution for our backups. One idea was a backup server, attached to that one a library, so we have a 24 hour window to backup.
Another was replacing the magstar with LTO drives ( 200 Gb tapes ), but as this is sequential access, and you need a single file that's at the end of your tape, I think restore time will take to long.
So I was just wondering which mechanisms ( hardware ) you guys use for your backups, and which one could be recommended?

thx in advance,

Regards,

R.

Hi, we are just changing our backup solution too. For the moment we are running TSM also whith a 3494 libray with 3590 drives.

We have the same backup window problem as you. After researchs for a faster and better solution we juste bought a new storagetek library whith LTO3 drives. We hope that our new drives with 80 Mb/s bandith will solve our performance problems.

TSM knows where it has put any specific file, and will position a tape volume at that location and then read the file to restore it on a client machine. It doesn't read a tape volume block by block to get to a file at the end of the tape, it sort of fast-forwards to where it needs to go.

Still, if you are worried about restore times, maybe you want to look into optical library solutions or a diskpool in TSM.

You might want to consider attaching an EMC Clariion or something similar to your TSM server. Stage the backups to disk then they can be written to tape at a later time (i.e. less busy time).
