I'm trying to take a backup of our SQL Server 2000 databases and I've come to realise that it's probably a good idea to backup master (so our user's logins are backup), model in case there in case any of the default objects have been modified and msdb because it contains tables relating to backups.

Am I right in thinking that msdb should be backed up last because it contains the details of the backups? (The view is total disaster recovery, so that if have a fire and physically lose the server, that we can rebuild on a new box with a fresh install of SQL Server 2000)

Many thanks - John

I've never considered backing up MSDB last because it contains the backup history. Sounds like a good idea to me. Having the most recent backups in MSDB could speed up recovery of databases.

It is important to backup the system databases. In addition to logins, master contains a list of databases and system configuration values. DTS packages and Jobs are among the other items stored in MSDB. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
