I have Backup Exec 9.0 running on a W2K Server Exchange / File and Print Server. The nightly backup seems to run successfully (it backs up the correct amount of data and the log files indicate that it is backing up the appropriate files) but the backup job will run indefinitely until it is cancelled. The backup job for the next day will then start and run but do so until it is cancelled again. Any ideas as to why this may be happening? Where in the log file should I look to see what is hanging the process?

Go to the job monitor tab, right click on the job and select properties. There are two tabs. Review the information on each tab, expanding any blocks that are compressed.

You should be able to find some information there about what happened with your job.

Other things to think about that you didn't mention:
1. How big is your backup job?
2. How big are your tapes?
3. Are you using an autoloader/library or a single tape device?
4. Does the job run Verify when it completes?
5. How long of a time is indefinately? Have you left it run for several hours to see if it completes?

The backup job is quite small actually - only about 36 GB being backed up to a 40 GB DLT tape in a single tape device (DEll PowerVault 110T). There is no 'Verify on Completion' and if left alone, the Friday backup will run until Monday morning when I cancel it. Once it backups up what it is supposed to, it the job just halts without backing up any more data nor completing the job altogether. I've reviewed the job property pages though no errors are immediately apparent. Thanks once again for the suggestions.

The tape size is only an estimate. So 40GB tape doesn't always hold 40GB of data. You have to leave room for the header. I feel your backup is requiring a second tape. Next time, take out the tape being used and put a second tape in. Then see what happens.

Go to the alerts tab - do you see an alert for media that needs to be ejected?

I have seen this countless times and it has been the media eject alert 99% of the time.
