We have recently upgraded ARCserve 7 to ARCserve 9 for Netware. We are running NW 6 with SP2 installed. It is running on a Compaq Proliant ML530, 1 Xeon Processor, 640MB memory.

For 4 days we had no problem then the backup hung in the early hours of the morning just as it is was about to backup the ARCserve Database.

The message at the server console is: "WARNING! Server experienced a critical error. The offending process was suspended or recovered. However, services hosted by this server may have been affected."

I tried to stop ARCserve with ASTOP, but this lead to the server broadcasting that it was now shutting down because of a critical error, however it was unable to shutdown. I used the emergency console but was still unable to shut down and had to eventually power down.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the hang up? It has since done one good backup and now hung again. I intend tonight to wipe the database and start with an empty database. Any other ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Also can any one tell me how to shut down a NW6 Server when even the Emergency console fails to?

Is ARCserve fully patched? What version of ARCSERVE.NLM are you running?

There were only a few pathches on the CA sight and none of these addressed my product or problem.

ARCSERVE.NLM is version 9.00 Build 575.009 11/14/02

Does your ABEND.LOG show what NLM the server is crashing with? Does your tape server log show any SCSI errors? Is the tape drive connected to the internal SCSI bus? Does your server have any NDS replicas on?

(Sorry for all of the questions...)

Thanks TheLad for coming back.

The Abend log shows it to be the CATIRPC.NLM NLM that caused the crash. The TAPE$SVR.LOG shows no SCSI errors. Yes the Tape drive is connected to the internal SCSI bus and no we do not have any NDS replicas.

There's not much info about ARCserve 9 and NetWare 6 yet ... I don't know too much about ARCserve 9 so aplogies if the TIDs below are useless:

I can tell you however that the two main rules of thumb for configuring ARCserve 7 on a NetWare 5.1 server (apart from patching) were as follows (don't know if they will help):

a) Server must have an NDS replica of it's parent partition

b) SYS:ETC\HOSTS must contain entries for the server itself and any other servers it backs up

Following the TID's I have tried changing the port number for catirpc to 7000 in the ASCONFIG.INI file. So far it has run OK.
