Backup hanging on .CAT files

OS: Windows NT 4.0 SP6a
System: ARCSERVE 6.61 build 834SP2a

I know this has been mentioned a few times before but I have tried everything already mentioned to no avail!

Everytime we run the backup it hangs while backing up the .CAT files. I have so far:

a) Deleted the .CAT files
b) Run Mergecat.exe (worked fine)
c) Run Database repair (no errors)
d) Followed all ARCServe database maintenance suggestions.

This keeps happening. Any ideas what is left to try? Should I just initialise the database? What implications would that have?.

Check the permissions on the ARCserve share.
See if it happens with a new test backup.
Check the user name and password for the ARCserve System Account.
