I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on my back up problem. We are running Windows 2000 server, and using Arcserve 2000 for our nightly back ups. We are backing up a payroll server (windows nt), and an exchange server (windows 2k) and the primary file server which the Arcserve is loaded on. Every night the pruning goes fine, the exchange server backs up ok, and then the primary gets stuck and I have to end up shutting the servers down to get it "un-stuck". Any suggestions? Waiting on our consultant, but he is very busy and I am desperate for a normal back up again.

Thanks!

Amy

Hello
Check on which place the backup gets stuck. Is it on updating the database or is it on backing up the normal files and folders? Check if you have any rAAA files in the ARCserve\database folder. If found more than 4, stop the database engine, delete these files and reboot the machine. Look for .cat files in the ARCserve\temp folder. Run
mergecat.exe from the command prompt under ARCserve directory. These are for issues related to updating database. If you give more information regarding the stuck up, it would be easier to resolve it.

We are using E-trust Inncoulate IT version 6.096.

I will check into this issue more and will try to provide for info.

Thanks!

Do you shut down your antivirus software before backing up? If so, give it a try. You can do this by using Pre/Post batch files....

For example, the PRE batch file will shut the service down something like this:

NET STOP "My Antivirus Software"

Your Post backup job will restart the service:

NET START "My Antivirus Software"

Obviously, replace "My Antivirus Software" with the service name in NT -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"
-----------------------------------------------------

I will definitely try this, but it never seemed to bother the back up process before?

Thanks!!
