Backup freezes

Help! I can compare, restore BUT when I try to backup my disk, after the scan of files the program just stops. After several minutes I have to Ctl-Alt-Del and end the program (it says its not responding). I have a IDE internal tape drive and Seagate BE 2.0i (came with drive - I know its old) & Win98. Recently I installed a Umax USB scanner, I think it may be "blocking" the backup?
Does anyone have a suggestion?
