I am trying to backup the config file on the 8600 without success. ftp and tftp flgs are turned off - at least they are in the only place I can find them - under bootconfig flags. Changing the flags to true will only help me if I boot the 8600, and I do not need to do that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your thoughts are correct. You can only turn on FTP and TFTP with the bootflags, thus requiring a reboot. Let's hope they fix that in a future release.

I can think of two methods:

1. You telnet into the switch, presumably using some sort of terminal program? If not, you can probably find a program on the 'net that will suit your purposes. Log into the switch, display the file, can't remember if its a "type" or "more" command to show the config/boot file, then do the old fashioned copy and paste into a local text file. Just be sure you copied all the lines properly.

2. The PCMCIA card is a standard ATA flash card. Its readable in most laptops. Copy the configs to the flash, pop the card out and into a laptop, then copy it off of there. You won't get any logs for the time period the flash card is out of the management card though.

Another method of backing of config file, is to telnet into the 8600 Switch and issue a [COPY tftp command] using CLI. You can find the exact command syntax in the reference manual at Nortel site. This option does not require a reboot.

Hi

Sorry it's a long time after your question, but I have come across the 'source' command on PP8600 which allows the config to be re-read so changes can be applied without a reboot.
What I am not sure of is whether this can be used on bootconfig.
Might be worth some research
