Friday night the system administrator setup a new Domain controller using windows 2003. Previously we had as a domain controler a SQL server machine running 2000. Now access to databases located on that SQl machine is not working die to a permissions issue that we have been unable to resolve. Also backup jobs running on other SQL servers don't work. I get the following error messages: Server: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot open backup device '\\sh-case2\s030backup\s030_tlog_200705070918.trn'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.

Whats wrong?

I would think it is a trust issue with the new domain controler. What does the SQL Server error log say?

BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP LOG [S030] TO DISK = N'\\sh-case2\s030Backup\S030_tlog_200705070918.TRN' WITH INIT , NOUNLOAD , NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT

Are there any errors in your Windows application log?

From the application log file:
18204 :
BackupDiskFile::CreateMedia: Backup device '\\sh-case2\s030Backup\S030_tlog_200705062130.TRN' failed to create. Operating system error = 53(The network path was not found.).

Also this warning keeps occuring:
Replication of license information failed because the License Logging Service on server \\SHDC2 could not be contacted.

It sounds like your sql server is no longer on the domain.

Do you have any tests I can perform to see if the SQL machine is on the Domain? I can access any machine on our network through citrix.

How can I establish trusted relations between the servers?

Ok I examined the Link. I checked my settings. All of the screens appear differently on my 2000 server but as near as I can tell, It all looks good and there was nothing to change.

If you're on the server can you ping other network server? can you map drives to other servers? You may need to drop it from the Domain and re-add it.
Do you have any domain logins to that server? Can they login?

I can't even map to a shared directory from case1 server to case2 server. I used the path \\sh-case2\s030backup and s030backup is a shared directory with the hand symbol. The old mappings have a big X and I can't create a new mapping to the drive.

I can't drop the server from the Domain because regular users of the database on Case1 are all connected and using it successfully now. So the best I can do is to schedule some down time for tonight. I just need to know all of the things I should do during that down time.

I would remove the server from the domain. Place it in its own workgroup.

Then follow the steps in the link to re-add it.

Good Luck.

Well the network admin was able to resote the connections to the other computers. Apparently the ip addresses changed when the new domain controller took over.

Your IP address isn't static? Make sure the Network guys assigns a static ip to all sql servers or you could run into this problem again.

All the SQL servers now have static IP addresses
