I receive this error after 513 gb have been backed up so kind of near the end. I then get the error alert via email The backup of the item is bad, so I go to the job log to get a better look. I cant open the job log, it gives an error of cannot open the job log, and brings up a blank log screen.

The event viewer isnt much help either, just giving the same error message as the email alert.

Please help - im losing my patience with Backup Exec!

Many thanks,

Nick

Do you have detailed logging turned on? If so lower it down.

Look in the job history and scan thru each resource your backing up. It should tell you what resource or server your getting and error on.

Thanks for the response steve - I have the logging at summary only (lowest amount of info), and still cannot open the log, it just freezes for about 10 mins then gives the error, and gives a blank log.

What about the job history? Can you open the job history?
Is this a mailbox backup?

i cannot open the job history - and part of the backup does do exchange but I do not know whether it fails on the mailbox part...

I would take the mailboxs out and run the backup or seperate it into two jobs. Most likely its one the mailboxs.and this will cause the job log display errror

brilliant, thanks steve. I shall separate the the two today and see how it goes.
Thanks,
Nick

It's probably worth pointing out that all the other data will be safely backed up and it is only 'failed' in the sense that it has not backed up 100% of what it is supposed to.

I have seen this before myself, and it was down to a mailbox with a message full of funny characters and chinese symbols etc.

I tracked down the rogue message, deleted it, and had no problems since!!

However, I was able to view the job log so that doesn't sound to healthy if it's not working....if you can't see any logging then exact fault diagnosis won't be easy!

Hi,

PMJI - I am experiencing this same problem, but I don't know how to track down the "offending e-mail".

The job log doesn't even mention which mailbox to look at for the problem. Even if I could find out the mailbox I could perhaps delete it from the backup temporarily.

Can you help me ?

Regards,
Jay

Hi,

This data is definately in the log - it may be difficult to find but its in there somewhere. I found that so many accounts were causing problems that I no longer even try to back this area up - I just back up the mdbdata relating to the emails.
