Backup Exec with Network Traffic Shaping

On a network level, how does Backup Exec work? Will it identify situations where the server it is restoring to/backing up from is running at a slower speed (Gig -> Fast)? Or if traffic shaping is being employed on the switches between Backup Server and Target (i.e. max throughput <= 80Mbps)? How does Backup Exec throttle the traffic?
