Hi,

I have two servers - one exchange and one file/print. If I install backup exec with exchange and remote agents on the file server, will I be able to backup mailboxes on the mail server?

I think the answer is yes, but just need to double check....

Yes, but you don't really want to backup the mailboxes, just the stores.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Why only the stores? Surely backing up individual mailboxes will allow for easy restores?

I think what he is saying (if im not mistaken) is that by only backing up the stores, you infact backup the boxes as well. I had made the mistake once of picking only certain boxes to backup and after deleting a user (say after they quit or left the company) I would have to remind myself to remove that checkmark. Otherwise it could cause problems.

You can still do easy restores by backing up the stores. what version are you running?

You always want to backup the information store for disaster recovery purposes. Yes this included the mailboxes but only if you have Exchange 2003 you can restore a mailbox to the Exchange 2003 RSG group. Basically you restore the information store to the RSG and use exmerge to get the mailbox. If you dont want to go thru this process then you select then information store and mailboxes "brick level" backups. Then it more easy to restore the mailbox.

Backup Exec 11d introduces GRT Granular Restore Technology where you only backup the information store and it can extract a mailbox out of the Information store backup.

If you are using Backup Exec you can do a store level backup and use Aelita Recovery Manager to extract mailboxes directly from tape.

exmerge only allows you to extract mailboxes that are a gross size of under 2GB (i.e. not necessarily what ESM reports and also think about dumpster contents).

Ah but 11d GRT does not work with tape backups, you have to B2F (backup to folder) so you need to make sure you have enough room when you enable this.
