I am using the built-in Vertias backup software that is part of Windows 2000 Professional. I am backing up about 17 GB to a separate hard disk (60GB, that has been formatted into 20GB, 20GB, and about 20GB as a 3rd spare partition).

This is all on FAT32, so I can get back to the stuff from
Win98.

Anyway, I started 2 backup jobs, to each of the two 20GB
partitions, but after exactly 4gb, each job stops and says
"end of media encountered while backing up to non-removable media..."

What gives? I saw something about 'Disable Media Spanning'
in another newsgroup. Is that what I need to do?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

I am having the same problem with Windows XP Home.

Any luck with a solution?

I am having the same problem as you guys, except my backup stops after 2 gig.

Im running Windows XP Pro, and backing up the user profiles to a 60GB mapped network drive running on a SunBlade2000.

I suspect my problem has to do with the maximum file size that the Solaris file system will support in its current configuration.

From what I remember about Fat32 though, you can't have files larger than 4GB (but I could be wrong).

One way you can verify this is to attempt to append a 4gb file onto another 4gb file from the command prompt. If that works then my theory is flawed, and the problem lies elsewhere.

I found this on another site that may be of some help if still needed....

Convert PC2s harddisk to NTFS, then you're allowed to write bigger files (if it's winXP or win2k) to do this Start => Run => convert c: /fs:ntfs is c: is the harddisk to convert. After the next reboot the filesystem will be converted and you're backup should be running fine.

Hope that helps. I was having the same issues. :D
