I am trying to restore yesterdays' backup and I am getting the following error:

The job failed with the following error: Database Query Failure - see job log for details.

Yesterdays backup completed successfully according to the job history reports. Any ideas what is wrong?

More info, from the logs:

An error occurred on a query to database msllockdb.
Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.

An error occurred on a query to database master.
RESTORE DATABASE must be used in single user mode when trying to restore the master database.

An error occurred on a query to database DATA_99.
Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.

An error occurred on a query to database DATA_02.
Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.

The strange thing is that NO ONE is in the database.

YOU are in the database and so is SA.

Each database (except MASTER) must be set to SINGLE user, this can be done via Enterprise Manager.

MASTER can be set into single user by using OSQL.

I'll find the command for you and post it. But take time to look in BOL for SINGLE-USER.

OOOPPPSSS! Disregard my post. I forgot I wasn't in the Microsoft SQL Server forum.

SQLBill,

This is for a MS SQL database.....does that make this a good post?

Yes.

Are you the DBA for the SQL databases?

Here's what needs done:

Use Enterprise Manager.
Expand to the databases.
Right click on each database (except Master)
Select Properties
Select the Options Tab
Check 'Restrict Access'
Check 'Single-User'

For Master,
Go to Start>Run
Type cmd and then click ok
You will need to change your directory until you are in the \MSSQL\BINN directory:
C:\path\MSSQL\BINN>

Then type:

sqlservr -m

I believe that's all you need. SQL Server comes with the Books Online. Use it and use the Index tab, enter OSQL and you'll find more information about using command line commands.
