Having a problem with Backup Exec 7.3 sbs on a Windows SBS 4.5 box.

When the backup runs of a night the job engine seems to fall over and the backup then stops. I have tried removing Veritas and updating mdac then reinstalling, have also tried the latest version/build from veritas's site and all patches that are appropriate. If you run manual tests of say 1GB, 4GB at the server these seem to complete all ok, I haven't run a complete as I can't sit there and watch it for 5 hours!!!! I think that it must be doing most of the job before falling over, say 8-10 GB, but not sure!!!!

The other thing is they have to use NT Backup for another piece of software, but this is all manually done first thing on the morning, after checking the Veritas job. They stop the Veritas services, then run NT backup, then restart Veritas. Could this be a problem? It hasn't been in the past, they have been running like this for a while.

Any ideas?

Sounds like something might be running in the background that causes the problem. Does it always reach the same set of files/directories in the backup?

As an easy first test try moving the time the job is scheduled for by a couple of hours in either direction and see if this makes a difference.

Also, work out the time that the job fails (elapsed time + start time) and look through event viewer around this time and see if anything is happening.

Worth checking to see if anything is scheduled to run via AT too.

Give these a go and see if it shows anything up.

Sorry should have replied earlier today, we think we have managed to sort. It appears that the customers mailboxes are extremely large, if we remove one of the very large mailboxes from the backup it all works ok and the engine doesn't stop. The customer is going to clear down the mailboxes and then we will eventually put them back into the backup and test again.
