Seems i'm having an issue with backup exec and wondering if anybody has any suggestions...

I upgraded a Dell poweredge 2400 server (formatting the NT drive) over the weekend and it was the slickest install i've ever seen. Currently running as a PDC on an 18 mixed pc network (95 to XP). All pc's are on the network, dns is fine, DHCP scopes are ok etc...

Monday afternoon the server locked up tight and had to be reset. upon reboot, all of the backup exec services failed to load. This was corrected (DOH!), set up admin by accident
with wrong pass to log in as service. Changed this back to system service.

Still getting lockups accessing tape drive with backup exec.
Event viewer shows "event id 9" scsi device failed to respond in time (tape drive). Lockup occurs right away. Locks up every time I try a backup.

Hardware is a dell poweredge 2400, hp colorado 20gb tape drive (ide runs off promise tx2 controller, changed to maxtor 133 with no luck), Mirrored scsi hard drives running from dell backplane and windows 2000 server (PDC), and backup exec 8.6.

This has to be a compatibility with backup exec. I uninstalled BE and installed a trial version of Novastor and everything works like a charm. Problem is, the client doesn't want to buy another backup software and wants to use BE because they are familiar with it :( I personally don't like the software, had too many problems with many different clients.

Any ideas???

Thanks

I've had problems with BE not 'seeing' my tape library after system problems. Try this, stop the BE services, power off your tape device/library. Wait about a minute or so, then power on the tape device/library and once it is up and running, restart the BE services.

Still not sure what's going on with this combonation of hardware and software. I really don't like dealing with backup exec and it's incompatibilities.

I've uninstalled BE but I know there are still drivers and files still remaining. I've installed tapeware and it worked for a little bit. Now i've got the tapedrive in a win98 workstation and it's running great.

Still wish I could get this resolved soon. I don't like doing backups across the wire.

Anybody with ideas???
