Backup Exec 7.3 - Services unable to start

I'm running NT4 server, and all of a sudden on boot up the 'Backup Exec 7.x Device & Media Service' says 'Started' although it actually hangs (as confirmed in Event Viewer and the Start and Stop buttons are greyed out).

This prevents the remaining 3 Backup Exec services to start and prevents Backup Exec from connecting to the tape drive (Compaq - which has worked fine up till now) when starting the application.

The tape drive is 'working properly' and can be seen from the server.

I have completely reinstalled the Backup Exec software (uninstalled everything, rebooted and reinstalled), tried the service with the system and Admin user accounts but the same service still hangs and everything behaves exactly as before.

Also, I have checked that I don not have a tmp or temp entry under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Currentcontrolset\control\Sessionmanager\Enviroment

If any one can help, it would be much appreciated.

if you mean it can be seen from the server that you can do a detect in control panel tape devices, then the drive is not at fault.

If it is a SCSI device, I would look for the obvious SCSI clash - you can see one device in a clash but cannot control it. Also, check the terminator.

Have you got another server you can test the drive on to rule out hardware trouble? Or another drive to test on that server?

Thanks for your help, however the tape device has been tested and is working ok.

When you uninstalled, did you go through the registry and remove all of the BE branches?

In the Backup Exec/NT directory, check out the file adamm?.txt (there will be 1 for each time you started the service). Check the newest file and that is the debug data file for BE. It should help with your problem.
