I am so very frustrated with this program. I have been messing around with backup exec for 2 weeks now. I had Backup Exec installed on another machine and it constantly failed. I decided that there was a problem with our tape device. Well, I installed it on another machine. After I installed it it seemed to work fine. I was able to see an active running status. I come in the next day and an alert is on the screen telling me to insert media. I do that, thinking well maby I asked the software to backup to much data. Well I come in the next day and it tells me that the media was labled such and such. Then after I respond OK, it asks me to put in new media again. At this point I hit cancel. I figured out that something isn't right. I tried to retention a tape and it aborts. I tried to go into NT Backup (NT 4.0)and an error comes on the screen telling me that there is a problem with my tape device, to check the cables, etc. This is the second tape device that appears to be broken (Seagate, Tarvan). The device did work with NT Backup last week. The lights on the device come on when a tape is inserted. I am having a hard time figuring out why it would work one day and then report that it has something wrong the next! Any help that you may provide would greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

To be honest, if NT Backup tells you that there is something wrong with the tape, then there ususlly is.
Try a full erase in NT Backup after you stopped the Backup Exec Services. After you done that, try a Backup with NT Backup and then with Backup Exec. If this don't work, then try to clean the drive with a cleaning tape several times and repeat the steps.

Thank you for your reply. All is running smoothly now. I do have another question for you though. I have tried to backup a network share and it gives me the connect box that asks for my username and password. I have entered every password I know and nothing seems to work. Any ideas on this one? Thank you again for your response.

1. Stop all services for Backup Exec in Control Panel\Services (NT 4.0) or Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services (Windows 2000).
2. In Explorer find "Backup Exec\Nt\Data" and rename or delete the file BEWINUI.UNI.
3. Restart all Backup Exec services in the services applet.

"Attach As" (also found under the NETWORK menu in Backup Exec) can be used on a per-share basis on lower-level resources that have different authoritative accounts (per share) beneath the top level. "Attach as" information will override any information provided for "set default attach information" at the top level, and will not filter down to shares occurring beneath it.

1. Click the "Backup Selections" tab on the bottom left of the screen.
2. Browse "Entire Network" or "User Defines Shares" to the machine where you have the problems.
3. Highlight the resource.
4. Go to the top of the screen to NETWORK and enter a valid Administrative account and password for the highlighted machine.

Alternatives:
1. Add the Backup Exec service account to the local administrators group on that machine you want to backup.
2. Change the Backup Exec service account to match the Administrative account or service account for that machine
3. Change the Backup Exec service account from a commonly used account name (like Administrator) to a unique account. This prevents scenarios where account names are identical but passwords vary from machine to machine.
4. Change the Backup Exec service account to a non-user account that will not be affected by regular password changes

Hope that helps

Thank you so very much. I will try that right away. I owe you BIG time!

Tilo,
Hello. I tried to do everything sugested above and nothing seemed to work. Any more ideas?

Thank you,
Tracy

Tilo:

Hello. Thank you for the links. The machine that I had a problem with is not in the same domain but I can see it and access it from network neighborhood. Last night I tried to backup a few servers in the same domain as well as the one that wasn't. I came in this AM and I had 2 problems.
1. The dialog box for permission for overwriting media was in the error tab. (I have this backup set to overwrite media, it shouldn't be waiting for a response from me?).
2. The log file for that backup indicated that it was unable to connect to any of the servers, including the servers that I didn't have a problem checking in the same domain.
I don't understand this software at all. I have had so many problems and through time I was able to work through them but WOW! It's just backup software!
Thank you, Tilo, for all of your help.

If there is a txt file of the log (bkupexec/nt/something.txt) can you email it to me?

There are a view files you might want to check, or e-mail me if you like.
These files are:

1. Bediag.fax
2. In C:\Winnt you will find following file
bkupinst.log

Maybe you want to send these to Zelandakh as well.
Two opinions are better than one :)

Good morning. This weekend I came into work. Uninstalled and reinstalled Backup Exec. I could sucessfully connect and backup the other computers in the same domain but could not backup the the 2 computers in the other domain. Unfortunately, I have no logs to forward now. Oops! One of the servers on the other domain is a Proxy. This could be my problem.

Thank you both for all of your help. It's nice to know that there is somewhere I can go when in need.
