I have had repeated failed backups using Backup Exec to backup our billing server running Windows NT 4.0. The last entry in the job log states that is has started the backup of the 3rd section of the job, but it never completes the job. When I get into the office in the mornings, the server is down because the job is still "running" even though the tape has ejected. So, I have to reboot the server and restart the database. I have made numerous changes to Backup Exec and have even tried using new tapes, but have had no luck. Any suggestions on a fix?

To prevent your server from being rebooted to kill a job, you can load the kill utility off the NT resouce kit CD, then use the kill command from a dos prompt and specify the job by using the PID in task manager. I can't really help with the backup issues though.

Thanks. But I figured out the problem with the backup. There is another part of Backup Exec (Exec View) that tells you the status of old and pending jobs. Our backup wasn't fitting on one tape, but the system wasn't set up to send us a message or shut the job down with no response. So, I inserted a new tape, finished the backup and then modified what files to backup. Everything is working now.
