backup error 42000

Anyone encountered an error 42000? When I use EM to backup my pubs database to a directory other than the default backup directory, I've got an SQL-DMO error (ODBC SQLState: 42000). It says 'Cannot open backup device 'D:\sql_backup\pubs.bak'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details. BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.' How can overcome this problem? In fact I tried on another machine but the path is 'C:\sql_backup\pubs.bak' and it's working. Is there a difference between c: and d: drive? Thanks!

I hate to ask an obvious question, but does the directory 'D:\sql_backup\ exist. SQL Server will not create the directory.
