Backup dumps creating virtual files

All of my backup dumps this morning are showing (from the sql log):
TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE: {'DBASQL_DB_name_PID1128TID3212BID0TS-353659875VD0'}

But yesterday they were:

TYPE=DISK: {'name'}

I cannot use any of these for restores.

Why is it creating a virtual device when the actual backup devices exist?

When the TYPE=VIRTUAL_DEVICE indication is found, this means that the backup has been performed via the so called VDI (Virtual Device Interface), which is a programmatic mechanism, allowing third-party solutions (like
BackupExec and ArcServe) to access SQL Server and perform database backups.

For more information, see Books Online, section Virtual Backup Device Samples in "Building SQL Server Applications".."Samples".

We have our database dumps and a tape backup dump done each morning. We have the dumps go to hard drive, so that we can either use that for a quick restore (tapes are taken offsite) and then our logs backup to that device. We also have Arcserve backup the databases to tape each morning.

When I attempt to do a restore now, only the backup that was done to the tape is listed and my hard drive dump is gone.

Why isn't the hardrive dump listed as this is the backup that is performed within sql server? We would only use the tape backups for restores if we had a complete server down as I don't want to have to restore the logs to tape.
