Our Database Server is installed on the same machine that is also acting as our Backup Domain Controller (BDC). I suggested that the Database server should be on its own device. The Network Administrator thinks that the BDC will hardly affect the performance of the database server. Is he correct ? What percentage of performance degradation will I expect if the database and BDC is on the same device for a medium size (50 users) company ? Does the BDC only works when the PDC is down ?

Thanks

That will be fine. In a 50 user network, the extra load created by the BDC function will be to validate logins and replicate the SAM from the PDC. Possibly replication of scripts also.

These 3 are very minor, and will not pose a problem to a database server unless the performance of said database is already marginal.

Don't worry about it!! :) Cheers,
Sam
