Hi:

I have 2 domain controllers AD intergrated DNS Servers with thousands of Hosts Records. Any idea whether we can do a backup of these Host Records? Or to enable logging so that everytime the servers will have the latest host records in case the server crash?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

active directy integrated... which means your regular backup should take care of it.

you say your DNS is AD integrated. As you will do you backups of the AD, DNS will be backupped with it.

what happen if it is my DNS that is corrupted. So how am i going to retrieve it and restore all those records?

The DNS records are in active directory so if your DNS data is corrupt then it's likely your AD is also, it this case you would performe a restore of your most recent system state backup.

Ok Thanks. But i wish to know..under system32\dns\backup
what does it actually backup?

Is it really impossible to backup the Host Records in a txt file or what? My customer is asking about it.

Also is there any way to extract out the DNS records from the system state?

Hi

The system32\dns\backup folder is used if you are hosting a non active directory integrated zone, a primary or secondary zone will have all records in a text file within that folder that you could backup or edit.

You can export all of the records to a text file from the DNS console but remember that most of the records will be dynamicaly generated by the client stations so you would only need to restore manual entries in the event of disaster.

If all else fails then you can perform an authorative restore of the zone from a system state backup.
