BackUp/Disaster recovery of MetaFrame 1

Can anyone reccomend a backup/disaster recovery solution for a MetaFrame 1.8 on Terminal Server 4.0 server are?

I am in the process of building and and testing a MetaFrame 1.8 server on Windows NT Termnal Server 4.0. Currently we are using a SAN Storage system and Veritas NetBackup software.

In the past we were using WinFrame 1.7 and found that while the Veritas software was able to backup the WinFrame server it was unable to restore properly. Specifically it could not restor the registry.

I have been checking various web-sites and haven't found anything that clearly states what the reccomended/best backup software for MetaFrame 1.8 on Terminal Server 4.0 is. I have seen documentation about how to install Seagate(Veritas)BackupExec for NT on Terminal Server.

Does anyone know what my options for backing up A MetaFrame 1.8 on Terminal Server 4.0 server are?

Exactly what do you have on the metaframe server that is so vital to back up??

The reason I ask is because we are running the same setup - I rarely back it up because if the server goes down I can rebuild the machine faster than getting it back from the tape (tapes can be a pain!!!). Since you are running Metaframe all apps are more than likely coming from an app server. Just make sure that you can recover from one of those servers dieing instead of the metaframe server.

Of course it all depends on what you have on the metaframe servers. It might be worth reconfiguring it so that all apps are coming from a central location - especially if you are having problems getting the tape back up to work.

Yes, I agree with you on all points. My manager wants to see that I can rebuild from a Tape backup. Which I have no intention of ever doing. As you said [sig][/sig]

Rather than have all apps coming from an appserver, you will get better performance installing ALL apps on each MetaFrame server.

Unless you are running large database applications, of course, in which case the front end should be installed on each MetaFrame server.

This way, each MetaFrame server is a clone of others, meaning you could use Ghostwalker to make copies of your servers, and further minimise build time.

With each server at the same build, load-balancing published applications is much easier, and the eggs-in-one-basket risks of an application server is eliminated [sig][/sig]
