Hello
we are using 11.1 with Tapeloader (7 Tapes, 1 cleaning tape, 1 drive)

When I'm define new backup jobs I don't know whether I define a SLOT or a MEDIA as destination.
My wish is to define only the slot no matter which media is inserted threre.

Is this possible?
as destination, I see all slots with the inserted tapes, they are named like "MONDAY 1", "TUESDAY 1", etc.

What does Arcserve? Does it make the backup on slot 1 or on MONDAY 1 ? If second, that means it doesn't matter in which slot the tapes are inserted?

You see, I have a lot of questions. I've worked for a long time with this tool, but with the new loader I've got some problems;-)

Thanks a lot.

Daniel

No sure if it's the correct way but I set our loader up using Device Group Configuration within Device Manager. Assigned a name to each device group I wanted then assigned a slot to that device group, in backup jobs I then point them at the device group as the destination. However in my case I only have two groups with 3 slots assigned to each, not sure if you need to do this if you just want one slot per group.

Hi,

By design of the product, when you have a tape library you canonly assign SLOTS to a device group.

And when u create a job, you have to pint to the Group. This would make the job pickup any tape available in the slots assigned to that specific device group..

Arcerve does not name the tape by the oreder of the slot. If on a wednesday it uses a tape from slot 12 it would still call it wednesday if it is a custom rotation job.

So it Shall be Written!
So it Shall be Done!!

mhm, that means I have to define a group for each slot, if I want to be sure ArcServe takes always the same tape for the same days?

Basically yes.

If you setup a rotation then after the first couple of weeks tapes should be pretty much used as you would expect them anyway without having to specifically setup groups as has been mentioned here.

If you have a barcode reader in your library it negates to some extent the reliance on physical named tape labels somewhat.
