I have just started using NT and have a primary domain controller. I am setting up another one for a email server. When setting up NT should I choose Stand alone or backup. I chose stand alone, but I cannot access my server to get the user profiles off. When it comes up to log on, just displays userid and password. When I go and change it from workgroup to domain and put in my domain and a existing name on the server it then can use my userids, but when it boots up it say userid, password and displays a drop down box for domains with the right domain in it but the drop down box give another domain which is the name of the email server ie.. mail. Is the correct?? Plus when I log on, I have the same start menu for domain users as I do for administrators, they cannot change anything but they can view my specifications. Any good book to recommend me getting to start getting the basics down?? Thanks [sig][/sig]

For NT mail or Exchange server you should use a domain controller so you have faster access to the User database. If you don't have a backup DC, this is the ideal opportunity to install one too.

If you do stand alone, it is kind of like a domain on its own and you also get the chance to log onto that computer as someone in the domain as well as logging on as the local, machine based, administrator.

My fave NT Server book is the bright yellow Dummies book as the QUE book is a bit heavy going. [sig]
Zel
zel@zelandakh.co.uk

[/sig]
