Backup bootstrap to disk 2

I have a Networker 6.1.1 server running on HP-UX 11.00

A feature of the build is that bootstraps are written both to tape, and for DR purposes, the bootstrap file is written to a disk volume (/nsr_boot). The volume is mounted with the command;

/opt/networker/bin/nsrmm -m -f /nsr_boot/

The purpose of all this is simply to ensure that when an Ignite backup (make_tape_recovery) of the server is performed, the most recent bootstrap is available in /dev/vg00, so that there is no need to refer to the bootstrap files on tape when the DR server is being built. This is performed with;

/opt/networker/bin/savegrp:-l 0 -I -c <client name> -P
lex_lg_01 bootstrap

Works fine and is a useful facility.

Except...

I'm building a 7.2.2 server on HP-UX 11.iv1 to replace the old server - and I believe that functionality is now a licensed product - when I try to define /nsr_boot/ as a file device, I get;

"Create failed: Server is not licensed for DiskBackup support. Install DiskBackup enabler"

As far as I can see that built-in functionality suddently became a chargeable option from 7.0 onwards.

Can anyone confirm this - before I go off and get a quote for a DiskBackup license - which may well be a tad expensive for all we want it for, does anyone else have an alternative route to getting the same solution? And...anyone know how much DiskBackup is (dollars or otherwise) if no alternative is available?

Thanks

Hi,

you are right that from NetWorker 7 the disk backup option is an add on feature that costs money. It is tier-based and the lowest, tier 1, will allow you to backup up to 1 TB of data to disk.

I can see why you are backing up the bootstrap to disk since it is very convenient to have the bootstrap on disk for your ignite backup. The only option without the extra license would probably be to shut down networker and backup /nsr/res and /nsr/mm. Are you backing up with Ignite once every day or how are you making sure you have a fresh bootstrap in your ignite backup?

It wouldn't take that much longer though to recover from tape. You will in both cases have to make sure you have networker installed (maybe you have included this within the ignite backup?), set up a device to read the bootstrap from and then follow the disaster recovery guide for how to run mmrecov. You would probably save a couple of minutes by running the mmrecov reading from disk, but the time consuming bit will be to restore all the client file indexes.

Terrific answer TechnicalUser.

Sorry for the long delay in answering - been away from PC's for a while.

I think I will go with the switch off, copy and restart routine with a script. Seems to work fine manually.

Ta!

If you have software maintenance for your Networker 6.x Installation you should contact an emc/Legato Sales representative.
To my knowledge if you used "backup-to-Disk" with 6.x they will give you a "backup-2-Disk" license for free to use with 7.x.

Unfortunately the client stopped buying maintenance for their 6.1.1 installation in 2004 - such is the desire to save "unnessary" costs these days. Would've made things so much easier.

Hi,

I don't want to be the bad guy BUT if your client has stopped paying maintenance years ago I'm not sure he is entitled to use/upgrade to the 7.2.2 version. Please check the end-user license agreement/maintenance agreement and consult your local EMC sales rep.
