When you create a backup using the SRMC on SEF 7x you get the option to put in a password.
You think to yourself well I am the only one that plays with the firewall and I am going to keep the backup on my laptop. I never let my laptop out of my site, I even sleep with it at night “I don’t need a password”. Think again!!
Let me list some very important reasons why you should put a password on your backup.
1. If you do not add a recovery password on your backup your SRMC access passwords will not work properly, therefore locking you out of the firewall.
2. Security. What better way to work out how to get through your firewall then a copy of the firewall config files or even worse if one of your junior admin’s is upset because he can not play Quake so he takes a copy of your firewall config from your laptop while you are at lunch. He makes a simple change to the cf files and replaces your copy with his. Next time you restore the backup (for a reason the junior might have caused) you have now allowed the junior to play Quake while you are on that business trip.
3. The most important reason “You will NOT be able to restore the backup configuration to new hardware”. If you don’t believe me check the link below.
