I have been 'gifted' with the task of reviewing our site's process for Cognos backup and recovery. We run Cognos finance V5.1 on NT4. I think I can spell Cognoss correctly, but that is about the limit of my knowlege of it...
Currently all files are copied to tape on a daily basis. Recovery would be a simple restore from tape.
The Cognos service is not stopped while the backup is performed. This concerns me as there is the potential for updates to occur while the backup is in progress. I have seen other DBMSs get very upset following a recovery where data files are in an inconsistant state.
The Cognos manuals I have make no mention of preventing user access or closing the NT services before making a backup.
Do any experienced Cognos users have any recommendations about how to make a safe backup?
Are there any tools available that can make a safe backup of Cognos while update activity is taking place?
Any advice is welcome. This posting is a personal opinion only, and may not reflect reality.
