We are using ArcServe 2000 Workgroup edition v 7.0 build 1086 running on a Win NT 4.0 Server with Svc Pk 6. We're running exchange server 5.5 service pack 4.
The decision was made last week to begin backing up our email, so I decided to install the backup agent for exchange. I downloaded from Computer Associates website the option guide for MS Exchange Backup Agent which provides a step by step process to install and configure the agent. I created a new user account(I wasn't sure that modifying the administrator account would cause a problem with its permissions) for the agent and assigned the proper permissions, installed and configured the agent per CA documentation. The installation went smoothly.

When attempting to modify an existing backup job via ArcServe Manager to include MS exchange server directory and information store I received an error of: Access Denied. Cross-Edition products (Workgroup, Enterprise, etc) cannot function together. Please update your client or backup agent's edition to match the edition of the ArcServe Manager.
I found that the cd I installed the agent from didn't show a distinction between workgroup or enterprise editions. In fact, at no point during the installation of the agent was I prompted to choose what edition I wanted to use. Has anyone had this problem before?

Where is the exchange server? hope it is on the arcserve
server itself..

check what is the build of the exchange agent form registry..
regedt32/hkeylocalmachine/software/computerassociates/arcserve/dsagent/currentversion/agent/dbaexch
highlight dbaexch and on the right pane check what is the build number and it should show as 414..
if not thats the problem..
arcserve and exchange agent are not the same build level..

check it out..

Hi
If you are using Workgroup Edition Arcserve Server and
Exchange server has to be on same machine with workgroup
you can't backup a remote database(oracle,exchange etc)

You need to upgrade to Advance Edition if MS exchange is a
remote from Arcserve server.

Hope this help
