Sorry if this has been asked before. I have a win 2000 server with a boot partition, am I wasting time and space backing this whole partition? It seems to me the only thing valuable on this partition is the system state. I am using Veritas 10.
If you can perform a full backup then you should really as you never know. Though depending on how often the data changes (and if you can afford to roll back that far) you may want to perform a full backup each week.
The system state will be good to restore the registry, boot info etc, but you will also need the supporting data that the registry relates to. Depending on what the server is used for, the profiles maybe of some use also for example.
If time and / or space is an issue, you could perform an incremental or differential backup.
When I have had to restore a server, I have always been glad that I had a full backup as contingency even if it was to get the correct drivers or host file info.
