i am attempting to backup my servers with third party software to a tape drive. it won't backup the ntuser.dat file it says it has a share violation. does anyone have a suggestion to what i can do? what backup software does anybody else use or do you use the backup stuff from NT? thanks for your help!

Why do you want to backup the registry with your normal backup?

You need an NT server to restore to, so that will already have a registry.

Backup Exchange server by using an Exchange agent or by manually copying the priv, pub and edb.

You may want to look into circular logging enable/disable. I use disable with incrementals this way all the log files are saved in between full backups thus allowing a speedie restore, you recover the last dB backup (not the logs) and play the logs bringing everything up to date providing it's not a failure of the log drive's. You must have a good backup and recovery plan this is where most exchange admins fail they get a dead server and their stuck.

Hope the links below help
