I am wanting to backup a user's pst file, but on a drive that they do not have access to view, edit, or anything. Is this possible?

I have a file server that is where I want to backup to, it is running Server 2003.

Just make a folder on the server and set the permissions so only you can view it. Keep in mind that you will have to be logged on to the users computer to see the shared folder to back up the PST. Is this what you are trying to do or do you want the user to be able to back it up?

It is something like that. I have a script that backs it up to a folder on the server. I was hoping that the user would not know about any of this happening at all.
I guess I can live with only read access with this.
I have the pst file on the C: drive and back it up to the server. The user triggers the backup now.
I guess I can live with only read access with this, but then will the backup actually happen with read only access?
I also do not know how to make it happen so the user doesn't know about it happening.

Here is what I did at my place. Put the user's PST file on a network shared folder. Mapped that folder to the user's computer so Outlook will be able to access it. Then you can backup the pst file without the user knowing it. However, I believed that as long as the user is still using the pst file, you won't be able to copy or do backup. But if you have shadowcopy turned on, you whould be able to backup anytime.

Microsoft doesn't support networked .pst files. And, Backup Exec doesn't like open .pst files, and will report they are corrupt (and the job will fail).

How do you want to back it up?

You could just write a batch file to connect to \\workstation\c$\restofpath\ and copy it to the server nightly.

Run this from the server and it won't matter about user permissions on the folder.

Windows and NT Admin.

We do the same thing as onechuck by keeping the pst file on a network share. Each user has their own personal folder that only the admin and they can access. We use Backup assist which is a really nice addon for ntbackup (only costs $150 too) and it backs them up fine so far.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I will actually try them all and see which one works best for me.

Thanks again!!!

If you are in an Exchange 2k\2k3 environment, you can use a tool that is on the exchange CD call Exmerge. This tool will allow you, in the background, to backup a users email account completely to a .pst file wherever you specify. This is just a copy and does not affect the user in any way. We have to use this tool for Security purposes for random audits. The .pst files when pulled by exmerge, allows any administrator to pull it up and see what is in the email account.
