Backing up to DVD writer

I am upgrading to win2k pro and want to install a DVD writer for backups as my tape drive has died. However, the windows backup program does not appear to backup to DVD writers. If this is true (can someone confirm, please) what backup software would you recommend (preferably inexpensive as I have a very limited budget!!)
