Hi.......i am not sure if this is possible.

I have an internal cd writer in a W2K professional machine. If i use Direct DC format........would i be able to use Microsoft backup to backup data on my machine to a wrtitable or rewritable CD ?

I tried it but it did not work........but i am not sure if i did something wrong or if it just does not work that way !

Any help would be appreciated !!!

Thanks

I have an internal CD-r/Cd-rw drive and am running win98 on an Aptiva machine. The RW disks have to be formatted for packet writing. (I'm not real sure that you can do this with the R disks, Haven't tried it) MS backup will write the backup file to the disk but will not span disks as it will with magnetic media. By backing up selective directories at a time I was able to get a full backup on three disks and can restore them.
Less than desirable. I have some reason to believe that a newer version of MSbackup is available which will span disks in the burner but haven't located it as yet.

Retrospect by Dantz appears to be an acceptable solution. Not greatly expensive and you have the opportunity to try it for a while before paying.

Adaptec, now Roxio, has a product called Go Back. It runs about $30 to $50 depending on where you can find it. James P. Cottingham

This question is in a similar vein...I have an rs/6000 web server but no tape back up yet. Since I can't use makesys b can I tar all the directories and burn them onto a cd to use as a backup?

Yes, you can. There is a post containing the instructions in the AIX forum, you may have to search a bit. But I remember in the same area that you can do a makesys and save it to the disk volume then burn it also. Someone correct me if I am remembering this incorrectly.
