Backing up sendmail

I am investigating moving from exchange 5.5 to sendmail to avoid the high costs of exchange 2000 Can anybody recommend a Backup solution for sendmail so I can keep the users inbox on the server and somehow shut down the inbox so it can be backed up and verified. (for users not welling to push a product I really need to know what exists so I can evaluate what is out there) .
