Can veritas v8 backup files on a drive that has been mapped.

No..it would defet the purpose of the licensing. Any remote server you want to backup you need the remote agent license. If its a Workstation OS then no license is required..just push out the remote agent software and back it up remotely. Same for the server..just need the license

Are you sayin that a machine with XP can be mapped and backed up, but one with Server 2K can't?

NO..backup exec doesnt backup mapped drives period. You can backup workstations remotely thru the agent by pushing the software out to the workstation without any additional licenses. If you wanted to backup a remote server you would push the software and need a remote agent licences and select the machine remotely
