Hi - This question have been often asked, but I can't resist asking again. I am about to put up a Red Hat Linux 2.8 Advance Server as a DB server running Oracle 9i. I know that Oracle has this utility RMAN that they can do hot backup right to a NFS directory on a local box. This is not what I am worry about, what I am worry about is what backup utility should I use and what's better to use for a novice Linux user? This is what I was thinking to do and use 1. Mount NFS drive on the local Linix box 2. RMAN within Oracle and dump the file 3. Using ARCServe 6.6.1 to sweep up the NFS directory. Yes, the Linux server will be installed with ARCSERVE Lient Agent for Linix.
I was thinking of using SAMBA, TAR as well. My other problem is that I don't have a local tape drive to use. The only tape drives that are available is on the SAN or via through ARCServer backup server. I am open for suggestions and recommendations. Please help!

Thank you in advance.

I didn't quite follow your implementation, but it is quite common to use 'rsync' to copy from source to dest in a linux environment. There are dozens of howto's about how to securely create an SSH connection to the source and rsync one or more folders/files based upon tests such as new file, time, date, size, etc.

Arcserve has its merits as part of an enterprise backup strategy. 'rsync' has its merits by being able to make a suitable "mirror" of parts of the source box into a destination. The dest needs to be running linux to "pull" the rsyncs. Otherwise the source (Oracle db server) could initiate the rsyncs as a push task.

This can be cron'd, BTW.

All I'm trying to do is backing up a dump file from the Oracle DB. Is "Rsync" is easy to use? Do you have a sample script or command on how to implement the rsync?

Thanks for your response.
