I just realized that I've become so infatuated with the greatness of Linux that I forgot some of the basics, like backing up my files. Well, backin' up is easy. I have the facilities to do that, and I know the types of files I need to keep around. Here's where I have the problem. I'd like to save the "System State" in Backup Exec terms. Basically, it's like backing up settings I have. Mainly, the way I have the panel configured, the desktop configured, that sort of stuff. Can anyone tell me what files those config files are?

If you're refering to "user preferences" type settings, they are normally put under each user's home directory, usually - but not always - in a hidden file or directory. The exact files and directories vary from program to program. For example, KDE puts user settings in the ~/.kde directory, VIM uses the ~/.vimrc asnd ~/.exrc files, and AfterStep and Windowmaker use directories under ~/GNUstep. Since there's so much variation, the safest course of action is usually to just back up the entire home directory, as you usually want to backup all your data anyway.
As for system wide default settings, these are usually put under /etc. Of course, if you edit the files, you'll know where they are, and if you don't, then there's probably no need to back them up, so you probably don't need to worry about anything but /etc.

For me the first thing to think about is:
/etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/shadow

So all the users ad their passwords will be saved !

and /var/spool/mail

soo all the mail of your users will be saved too.
Can some one tell me if saving /var/spool/mqueue/

I will save the queu ?

so when restoring the mail queu all the mails in the queu will be sent ?
