I was wondering if anyone could help me out. We just installed BE 8.6 and got everything working together. Now we are trying to create backup jobs. When we go to create the new backup job, BE won't allow us select other servers on the network from the selection menu, as all the servers on our network are grayed out in that window, while all workstations on our network are not. If anyone could help us out that would be great. Thanks.

Hi superco7,

To back up any NT servers on your domain you will need to purchase remote agent licenses from Veritas. One for each server. Without these, you will not be able to back up any data from the servers.

Here's a way to make sure you order the licenses that you need...In the following, when I say Install BE, between steps DO NOT uninstall it. Just run the disk again and add the next option to be tested.

1. Install BE WITHOUT any licenses, this is evaluation mode. Choose custom installation and only install the basic BE. Check to see what works and what doesn't. (obviously from your post this won't work, so you might just want to go ahead to the next test point).

2. Install BE, this time add Remote Agent, check everything again. If it still doesn't do what you expected, go to the next test point.

3. Install BE, this time add OFO (Open File Option), check everything.

Once you have everything working the way you hope to, then order the licenses. Remember, you need one agent and one license per server you are backing up. This test will NOT tell you how many agents/licenses you need, it only tells you that you need them.

Hey guys thanks for the response. I guess I was under the impression that what I bought included the Remote Agent License. This is what I have so far....

Veritas Backup Exec v8.60 for WinNT/2000 with the following licenses: Server Edition, Library Expansion Option, Exchange Agent, and Oracle Agent.

I guess my question is if we need the remote agent licenses also. We talked with a rep at Veritas before we purchased the upgrade, and he said we should be all set, but it seems to me that you guys are right. I just wanted to verify before I spend any additional money on the remote agent license. Thanks Again.

You need a remote agent license per server - (nt server, 2000 server)

Remote agent license not required for: nt workstation, 2000 professional; however, you still have to install the agent on these machines.
