I am running Windows 2000 With Exchange 2000 and using Arcserve 2000 with Exhange with the Exchange agent. I want to ensure I am doing a complete backup of my Exchange server. In Arcserve 2000 I back up my entire system plus the Microsoft Information Store and the Microsoft Exchange Server - Brick Level. However I do not backup the M drive. Plus there is another section that says Exchange server, but it is basically the same Information Store and Brick Level again, so I assume it is not necessary. Any advice on using Arcserve 2000 with Exchange 2000 would be appricated.

The M drive is probably a mapped drive to another server. If you are backing up the other server, then you wouldn't need to backup the mapped drive M. Under MY COMPUTER click on the Mapped M: drive and see what it links you to.

There is two ways to backup the exchange in Arcserve 2000. You can do it through Exchange Organization or the Network. I know I read a technical note that says if the server you are using to do the backing up, is the same server that hold exchange 5.5/2000 then you use the Exchange Orgainization to backup your information store, directory and brick level, if you are using this option. If the exchange server is not the backup server, then you use the Network option. I have tried both options and they both work and my exchange server is not my backup server. You only need to setup one of those options.

I don't know much about Exchange 200 yet, I'm in classes to learn about it, but - our instructor was talking about this situation. He told us under no circumstances backup the M drive as it would corrupt your Exchange. Supposedly, there is a Tech Net or Knowledge base article on this specific issue. Maybe you should look there?

My exchange server is my backup server as well. I am backing up via the information store, but I am not sure if I have some permission issues or what, but I can't seem to get a proper backup that I can restore properly. Things seem to backup correctly, but when I goto backup certain files it crashes or fails. Any thoughts?

You are not allowed to backup or scan (with Virus Software) the M: Drive because it is a virtual drive created by Exchange 2K. Sometimes the backup services fail and you see two instances of the backup possibilities. You have to choose the instance which you can open to see the Stores and Postboxes. You have to backup also your System State and the Site Replication Service (SRS) else you wont be ables to restore your server in the case of a total crash (RAID failure ...). Some other programs (Veritas BackupExec) can backup the drive M and save single Mails, ARCserve not.
If you see two instances to backup, restart the ARCserve services or restart the server. If you have an X5.5 server in the same site, try to restart the directory synchronization service. You can restart this service without restarting any other services.
