I've worked with both ArcServe and Backup Exec and there doesn't seem to be an adequate solution to backing up client machines. The kinds of problems I've encountered include:
Backup runs at night and client machine goes to sleep (power management).
Laptop client machines are offsite so unavailable to the backup software.
Client users change or remove their shares.
Wake up on lan solution is costly and unreliable.
Client agent software susceptible to power management problems.
Client users switch off their machines at night.
The closest I've come to a solution to these problems is to have all client users leave their machines on at night and disable all power management features. This is extremely unreasonable for laptop users who have to adjust the power management settings when they leave the office.
THERE MUST BE A GOOD SOLUTION!!
Please advise.
