Just wanted to find out if backing up the entire registry in case of harddisk crash would be of help. Would i then be able to then install 98 on another disk and import the registry file? OR would i still need to image the drive?

thanks

If all you want to do is to backup the desktop (keeping in mind that many of the icons on the desktop are just shortcuts to applications) then you can just go to Windows Explorer, then navigate to "c:\windows\" and copy the "desktop" folder somewhere like a CD or floppy (if there isn't a lot of stuff there).

If you want to have a backup of all the programs, then a disk image is the best way to do it.

Re-installing Windows after formatting always seems to work. Just re-installing often leaves problems.

Another thing to do is to strip C:\WIndows and restore it from a backup region in DOS, which works fine except for longnames so I got around that too. I put a page up,

If you have 2 Hdd's on your pc, Use the Win98 Backup facility and backup the whole of your C: drive. If you then have a Disk Failure. Reboot your PC with the 98 CD in and use the PCRESTOR.BAT facility on the CD. This install 98 and prompts for the backup which it then restores over the New installation and returns your PC to the exact state as the time of the Backup. I have tried this and it works fine

thanks for the replies! very imformative. Question...a backup of the registry would be useful within the same installation of 98SE if a program gets corrupted etc? Not for a re-installation correct?

thanks again.
