hey,

I have a box running 8.1.7.0.1 on SuSE 7.1 which will start an instance but will not create a database. after poking around a little I noticed that its processes (pmon, dbwr et al) were owned by root instead of oracle. I know I installed it as oracle so that's not the problem. This is my 5th install of 8i on Linux (bazillions on Solaris & NT)but 1st w/a problem. I know about the root.sh & glibc bugs and applied the appropriate patches (same as 1st 4).

has anyone ever seen this type of behavior (on ANY platform) and if so what were the cause(s)/fix(es)?

thx!
