I have a lot of background noise, like static fizzing (not buzzing or humming) which seems to be simply because the actual line volume is too high, similar to when one turns up the volume on a stereo without any music playing.

This is before I even dial or do anything, simply picking up the handset and listening to it. Is there a way of reducing the noise/volume on a phone through padding maybe?

Thanks

Try looking at some of the user options off of the menu in the phone. Look for sidetone settings.

I agree with Belevedere. For me, changing the sidetone to 0 and even turning noise reduction on, made a huge difference. Just don't overdo it. You can try changing the sidetone to 3 then 2 then 1 as needed.
You have to log into the phone as admin, and then use the following menu options (I forgot their names but remember the numbers :)
