Background Gradients won't print correctly in Word

I've been able to reproduce this problem on every PC I've tried.

When I give a word document a background via FORMAT-BACKGROUND-FILL EFFECTS and creat a gradient, it appears correctly on the screen but prints the gradient "tiled". I've tried from multiple machines and all 3 of our color fiery's and get the same results.

What could it be?

It doesn't have anything to do with Word. That is just how gradients print. Your monitor is capable of producing many more colors than your printer is. Here is an article:

Then why does the same gradient....full page and with the same colors print fine from Quark XPress?

You do have a nice printer and software. Why not use Quark for this instead of using a word processor?

That would solve this particular problem anyway.

However, it's our Publicity dept. It's difficult to justify the expense of the $800 Quark license + training for users that are at best putting together fliers.

I wouldn't expect a background fill effect to print at all; it's a screen effect. Can you say exactly what you are doing?
