Sure, if you are an expert in windows API have at it. Not the easiest thing to work with, IMO. Those who are good at it, can do some pretty cool things.
The technique outlined in that link is called OwnerDraw (and knowing that you may be able to Google for better, more comprehensive examples). It is a pretty powerful way of modifying how many of the built-in controls are displayed - but, as MajP hinst, it is not for the fainthearted.
