Hi, does anybody have a clue how to remove the Backdoor.Beasty.Family virus? According to Symantec its easy and of no threat.. why then can I not get rid of this damn mennace?
I've Recently installed Norton Antivirus 2005 on top of Norton System works pro 2004. It worked fine for a while until I think something was downloaded and have since been getting a pop up from norton everytime I right mouse click within explorer it says, its detected the virus and deleted it. Great! ,, well, no. - actually, you right mouse click and up it pops again.. it pops up about 3 times for every mouse click. Ive done a complete scan more than once inc. in safe mode & it cant find anything. Ive also disabled system restore and still nothing. Checked the reg keys it suggests and I cant find any mention in the reg keys, but as soon as I right mouse click up it pops!. Uninstalled Norton completely and re-installed & its still there.
I thought it might be something wrong with norton but with it uninstalled sure enough I dont get any popup messages but there is a second or two delay between click and anything appearing.
Norton is also backing up the virus. I can delete these but its a pain.. its averaging around 100 backup files per mouse click!
Any help greatfully appreciated. Thanks in advance, Martin.

Something is lurking in the background!

Download and run Sysclean from Trend along with the latest pattern file - also download adaware se and spybot sd 1.3 and ensure they are updated and run these through too... as a final check, get hijack this and post the log here...

I detest norton!

Kes:)

Thanks for that, i'll certainly give it a go. I have used adaware and it didnt pickup anything. I'll certainly try spybot though. Where/what is hijack this and how would I post a log? THanks. Martin.

The latest HijackThis can be downloaded from here.
Follow the application instructions to save the log to a file and then cut and paste here.

Hi, ive just paid for noadware which hasnt fixed it, HOWEVER!...
Its found something of interest. Here is the log :
Noadware Log
Date : Saturday, February 12, 2005
Time:02:23:03TYPE File
ACTION Deleted
NAME regsvr32.exe-396dea2c.pf
PATH C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

I remove this then right mouse click and the virus msg from norton pops up. If I search again using noadware, I get the same file. Coincidence? Ive tried it several times with the same results. Guess I just need to find out what puts it there! any help appreciated.
Regards
Martin

Hi mrbud

Sounds like some form of trojan...

As a general rule of thumb, don't pay for anything to remove adware/spyware for you as some of them are malware in themselves - it's difficult to sort the good from the bad - As to your Hijack this log, I will post what I think you kshould def delete after I ask this: COPERIC - do you use this and do you find it useful - I have recently found that if you use this it seems to attract malware/trojans... I would recommend that you remove it BUT it can mess up windows .... let me know please. In the meantime, delete the following and download 'ewido security suite' (put a search in google) evaluation version - this picks up more trojans than anything I have ever seen....

Good luck - there are other things that I would delete on a machine if it was in front of me but I have no ideas what programs you have etc. Look in Add/Remove programs too and remove anything that looks suspicious or is a form of search bar etc.

mr bud, for xp, from safemode go to C:\windows\msagent and delete a file ms****.com (**** are random) which is either 30kb or49kb in size. Next got C:\windows\system32 and delete a file named ms****.com (different random name) but with the same file size. Next do a search for dxdgns.dll and delete it. If you cant find those files, you may not have beastie. To be sure search for another file, .blf, usually in windows/system32. If that file isnt there, its not beastie.

Thanks for your help. Over the weekend however I took the drastic step of purchasing a new hard drive so I could format the old one. What happened was odd. When I installed the new drive I actually at first put it in as a secondary so i could copy files accross. When I booted, there was no sign of the virus! no right mouse click msg. I have no idea. Anyway I have since installed the os on the new drive and have got the original as the secondary so I will have a look for those files on it out of curiosity.
It really got me beaten. A number of people around the web report similar problems. Im suspecting Norton has something to do with it. Either NAV2005 or Security PRo 2004. Re-installed NAV2005 and nothing yet.
Thanks again. Martin.
